How document upload works

eggz uses AI to automatically extract data from your receipts and bills. Upload a document, and eggz reads the merchant name, date, amounts, line items, and categories — no manual data entry needed.

Supported file types

Any file up to 25 MB.
Word documents, Excel files and TIFFs are not supported. Convert them to PDF or JPEG before uploading.

Upload methods

Drag and drop (desktop)

The fastest way to upload on desktop:
1

Navigate to the upload area

The drag-and-drop zone appears on the Dashboard (home page) and the Expenses page.
2

Drag files from your computer

Drag one or more files from Finder or Explorer onto the upload zone. The zone highlights when files are hovering over it.
3

Drop to upload

Release the files. eggz immediately starts processing each document.
You can upload multiple files at once. Each file is processed independently.

File picker (desktop and mobile)

Click the upload zone to open your system file picker. Select one or more files and confirm.

Camera capture (mobile)

On mobile, use the camera button in the bottom navigation dock:
1

Tap the camera button

The camera icon sits between Home and Expenses in the mobile bottom dock.
2

Take a photo

Point your camera at a receipt or bill and take the photo.
3

Confirm upload

The captured image uploads automatically. If you prefer, tap Upload from Photos Instead to pick an existing image from your gallery.

From the eggz Chrome extension

If you use the eggz Chrome extension with a connected eggz account, you can upload without opening the web app:
  • Upload document in the side panel — PDF, JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF or HEIC up to 25 MB.
  • Send tab screenshot — captures the page you’re viewing (for example an invoice in webmail) and uploads it as an image.
  • Capture the bill on this page — a banner offers it whenever the page looks like an invoice, and a PDF is sent as the original file, not a picture. See Capture bills from any page.
  • Collect a whole billing page — three or more documents on one page becomes a single approval, and anything eggz already holds is skipped. See Collect every bill on a page.
Extension uploads use the same document credits and pipeline as the dashboard. Files appear in eggz like any other upload, and extraction starts automatically.
Don’t have it yet? Add the eggz Chrome extension. It’s free, and it can even capture bills from any page you’re browsing.

Email forwarding

Forward a receipt or bill to your workspace’s own eggz address and each attachment arrives as a pending receipt automatically — no app to open. See Email-in: forward receipts to eggz for how to get your address and who’s allowed to send.

What happens after upload

1

Document stored

The file is securely stored in eggz and a new receipt record is created with status Pending.
2

AI extraction

eggz uses AI (powered by Claude) to read the document and extract:
  • Merchant/vendor name
  • Transaction date
  • Total amount and currency (a receipt that shows only ”"isreadinyourorganisation′sowncurrency;it′sUSdollarsonlywhenitsaysUS" is read in your organisation's own currency; it's US dollars only when it says US or USD)
  • Individual line items with quantities and prices
  • Expense category
3

Review extracted data

Once processing completes, the receipt status changes to Processed. Open the receipt to review and correct any extracted data before syncing to Xero.

Publishing to Xero

After a receipt is processed, you can publish it to Xero from the Publish to Xero card on its detail page — you review the pre-filled details, then approve. eggz creates the appropriate record based on whether the receipt is paid or unpaid:
Each receipt can only be published to Xero once. Make sure the extracted data is correct before publishing.
See Publish a receipt to Xero for the full walkthrough — when the card appears, choosing accounts, and what happens after publishing.

Document limits

Your plan sets how many documents eggz processes for you. Your live usage is on Settings > Billing in the web app, which shows how many documents you have left and, on Solo, Growth and Business (whether billed monthly or yearly), when the monthly allowance refills. Settings > Billing shows the paid plans with their current prices, and your document usage on every plan. Yearly plans are billed once a year and have the same monthly document allowance as the monthly plan; there is no separate yearly cap. Prices and every other limit, AI messages included, are in Plans and prices. Document usage on Settings > Billing leads with the documents you have left, then where they come from: your plan’s allowance, packs (yours until used) and repeating packs. When you change plan, it shows the new plan’s allowance beside the pack documents you still have. The upload button shows the same number, as Select files (104 left), or Select files (Unlimited) on Scale.

Document packs

Need more documents than your plan includes? Ask eggheadz how many documents you have left, in the web app or the Chrome extension, and buy a pack from the card it shows. To have one bought for you when you run low, turn on Auto top-up in Settings > Billing. Packs are sold on every plan except Scale. Scale’s documents are unlimited, so there is no pack to buy.
  • Packs run from 100 to 10,000 documents. A pack of 100 to 499 documents costs A0.40adocument.From500documents,it′sA0.40 a document. From 500 documents, it's A0.30 a document.
  • Repeating packs come in blocks of 100 documents, at A0.30adocumentbilledmonthlyorA0.30 a document billed monthly or A0.15 a document billed yearly.

How document credits are counted

  • One document, one credit. eggz charges one document credit for each document it processes, however many pages it has. A 3-page PDF is one document and uses one credit, not three. Only documents eggz successfully processes count towards your usage, which is the same rule the Settings > Billing usage card states.
  • A file eggz already holds is not charged again. Drop, pick or capture a file eggz already has, byte for byte, and eggz says receipt.pdf is already in eggz. instead of processing it, even when you’re out of documents. When the eggz Chrome extension collects the invoices or receipts listed on a page, it also recognises documents it already holds from that same website, and the approval card tells you the split before you decide, as 3 new, 51 you already have. A new copy whose bytes differ, such as a fresh Send tab screenshot or a PDF the website makes again, is a new document and counts.

Troubleshooting

Check that the file is a supported format (PDF, JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF or HEIC), under 25 MB, and that the image is clear and readable. Blurry photos or very low-resolution images may fail to extract correctly. Try re-uploading a clearer version.
AI extraction is not perfect. Open the receipt detail page and edit any incorrect fields before publishing to Xero. Common issues include misread dates, incorrect totals on faded receipts, and missing line items on complex multi-page documents.
Your plan has a document allowance. Once you reach it, new uploads are refused with an upgrade prompt and nothing is stored, so keep those documents and upload them again after you upgrade from Settings > Billing or, on Solo, Growth and Business (billed monthly or yearly, the allowance refills every month either way), after it refills. You can also buy a document pack. On Free the allowance does not refill, so upgrading or buying a pack is the way to process more.
No. One document is one document credit, however many pages it has. See How document credits are counted.
Not for the same file. eggz recognises a file it already holds, byte for byte, however it arrives, and tells you it’s already in eggz. A collect also skips documents eggz already holds from the same website. A new copy whose bytes differ, such as a fresh tab screenshot, is processed as a new document and counts. See How document credits are counted.
Ensure your Xero connection is active in Settings > Integrations. The receipt must be in Processed status before it can be published. If publishing a paid receipt as Spend Money, you must select a bank account first.
