Bookkeeping software for small business in Australia
Four tools run Australian small business: Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks and Reckon. Here's which suits who, without the affiliate waffle. Then the bit nobody mentions: whichever you pick, someone still types the bills in. That's the job eggz AI took (boring, thankless, we like it).

The four worth considering
- Xero
- The default here. Most Australian bookkeepers know it, nearly every app connects to it, and bank feeds and BAS are solid. Priced per organisation, so a second entity is a second bill.
- MYOB
- The older Australian one, and still the better fit if you run payroll for a decent-sized team, or you're in a trade where your accountant has used it for twenty years and isn't changing.
- QuickBooks
- Usually the cheapest way in, on a heavy introductory discount that doesn't last. The software's fine. Fewer Australian bookkeepers know it deeply, so the help you get from your accountant can be thinner.
- Reckon
- Australian, cheap, and where people go when a Xero price rise stings. Smaller app ecosystem, so check the other tools you rely on actually connect before you move.
What none of them do
All four give you a ledger. None of them fill it in. The bill still lands in your inbox and someone still types it into the software, usually you, usually at night. That's the part eggz AI does: it reads the bill where it arrives, works out the GST, categorises it, and posts it to Xero as a draft. You approve it or you don't.
What eggz does once it's on
It reads the bill where it already is
Bills arrive by email. eggz reads them there, the moment they land, so there's nothing to forward and no address to remember.
It codes them the way you would
Set a supplier's account once and eggz follows it from then on.
GST comes off the document
Read off the invoice, not estimated from the total, so what lands in Xero is what the supplier charged.
Quotes and invoices go the other way
eggz raises quotes under your own template and turns an accepted one into the invoice.
Questions people ask
- Which is best for a sole trader?
- Xero if your bookkeeper already uses it, which is the honest answer most of the time. Reckon if you're paying for yourself and the price matters more than the ecosystem.
- Do I need bookkeeping software if I have an accountant?
- Yes, and your accountant will thank you. What they charge for is judgement. What they end up doing is chasing paperwork you could have sent them coded.
- Can I switch later?
- You can, and it's less painful than people say, but conversions cost money and time. Pick on what your bookkeeper knows rather than on this month's discount.
- Where does eggz fit?
- On top of Xero. eggz does the data entry and Xero stays your ledger, so your BAS still comes out of Xero exactly as it does now.
- What about bank and card statements?
- Coming soon. Today eggz reads bills, receipts and supplier statements out of your inbox.
eggz handles one organisation. Several entities under one login, or multi-stage approvals through a finance team, is a bigger platform's job.
