Troubleshooting

A lot of what looks like a fault here is the extension doing something deliberate. Find your symptom below and you will get the reason and the fix.

The toolbar button opens a side panel, not the card

That is expected on pages Chrome will not let extensions draw on: its own chrome:// settings pages, the Chrome Web Store, page source, and files opened from your computer. The card cannot exist there, so the side panel opens instead. If you are on an ordinary web page and still getting the panel, check Settings → Open as. It may be set to Docked side panel.

The card is in my way

Three things you can do, in increasing order of permanence. Move or resize it. Drag its top bar to move it, or any edge or corner to resize. It remembers where you put it. Snap it smaller with the three size buttons in its header: Dock to the side, Medium size, Fill the window. Or switch to the docked panel for good, with Settings → Open as → Docked side panel. From then on the toolbar button opens the panel and the page makes room for it. To close the card, click the toolbar button again, or the × in its header.

A keyboard shortcut does nothing

Almost always, another extension or app already owns that combination.

1. Open Settings → Advanced → Keyboard shortcuts. It shows what each command is bound to right now. If a command reads not set, it has no key.
2. Click Change shortcuts…, or go to chrome://extensions/shortcuts, and give it a different combination.
3. Come back, and the list will already show the new key.

Next workspace and Previous workspace ship with no keys at all, on purpose. They do nothing until you give them some.

I dragged a tab and nothing happened

Check what you dropped it on. If it was a folder, remember that folders hold workspaces rather than tabs. Hold still over the folder for a moment and it opens, then drop on a workspace inside it. If it was an archived workspace, that will not take drops. Restore it first. If it was empty space, nothing happens. Only workspace rows, pinned workspace icons and the Resources pane accept a tab. There are also two kinds of tab that can never be filed: incognito tabs, where you will see “Incognito tabs can’t be moved to a workspace.”, and Chrome’s own internal pages.

I dropped a tab in the wrong place

For ten seconds after any drop, the message in the corner has an Undo button. Click it, or press ⌘Z (Ctrl+Z on Windows and Linux). If ⌘Z did nothing, either the ten seconds were up, since the message has to still be on screen, or your cursor was in a text box. In a text box, ⌘Z belongs to the text you are typing, so click somewhere else first. See Undo.

My tab moved when I wanted a copy, or the other way round

Dragging moves by default. Hold ⌥ Option (Alt on Windows and Linux) as you let go to copy instead. The card that follows your cursor spells out which one you are about to get, so glance at it before you release. If you would rather it copied every time, turn on Settings → Open Tabs view → Keep the original tab open when dragging to a workspace. The modifier then moves instead.

A workspace has vanished

There are two likely explanations. It was archived. Scroll to the bottom of the workspace list for a collapsed Archived (n) section, click it open, and use Restore. Or you are searching for it. Archived workspaces are deliberately kept out of search results, so open the Archived section instead. If it is not there either, it was deleted. Deletion has no undo, but if you have an encrypted backup from before, restoring it brings everything back.

Right-clicking a workspace row gives me the browser’s menu

That happens in two situations, both on purpose. One is while you are typing a new name into that row, where you may well want the browser’s own text menu. The other is while you are ticking rows with checkboxes, because in selection mode a row has no menu of its own. Finish or cancel, by pressing Esc, and right-click will bring up the row’s menu again. So will the ⋯ button that appears when you hover the row.

A tab reloaded when I clicked it

It had been unloaded to free memory. The tab stays on your tab strip, but its page contents were released, so Chrome fetches it again when you come back. To stop it happening to a particular site, add that site to Settings → Advanced → Protected Domains. To stop it happening automatically at all, set Settings → Advanced → Performance & RAM → Performance mode to Manual. Full detail on Performance & RAM.

”Nothing to suspend here”

Everything in that window is protected. Your active tab, pinned tabs, tabs playing sound, Chrome’s own pages, and anything on your Protected Domains list are all left alone. That message means there was nothing left that was safe to unload.

My snapshots list is empty

Session Time-Travel may be off. Check Settings → Advanced → Sessions, where the switch is at the top. Or it may just be early. The first snapshot appears after five minutes, and the screen says so while it waits.

An import file was not recognised

You will see “Unrecognized file format.” The Import box takes two kinds of file: an eggz Tab Manager encrypted backup, which is the .json file the Export button produces, or a workspace export from the tool you are migrating from. Anything else is refused, and nothing is touched. If you are restoring a backup and get “Incorrect password”, the password is the one you typed when you exported it. It cannot be recovered or reset. That is the point of the encryption.

The AI will not let me in

The assistant needs you signed in to eggz, and the AI tab shows a Sign in to eggz card when you are not. If you sign in and the panel does not update, give it a few seconds, or close and reopen it. More on Connect your eggz account.
